How Often Should You Get a Nail Fill?

By Nail'd It! Spa  ·  April 2026

The short answer

2–3 Weeks

That's how often most clients need a nail fill. Here's everything you need to know about why — and when to come in sooner.

Most clients ask us this on the way out the door — "When should I come back?" The honest answer is every 2 to 3 weeks for most people. But knowing why that timing matters — and what to watch for between visits — means you'll never walk around with nails that are overdue or damaged without realizing it.

We've been doing nails in Stanton for over five years. Here's what we tell every client about how often to get a nail fill.

Why Every 2 to 3 Weeks

Your natural nails keep growing underneath the acrylic. After about two weeks, a gap forms between the product and your cuticle — that's the fill line. It's not just a cosmetic issue. That gap collects moisture, and moisture trapped under lifting acrylic creates the conditions for bacteria or, in worse cases, a fungal infection.

Coming in for your acrylic nail fill every 2 to 3 weeks keeps the product bonded, the shape maintained, and your natural nails healthy underneath. Most of our regulars come every two weeks. Some stretch to three — it depends on how fast your nails grow and how you use your hands.

"Two weeks is safe. Three weeks is fine. Four weeks is when we start seeing problems."

Signs It's Time — Even If It Hasn't Been 2 Weeks

The calendar is a guide, not a rule. Your nails will tell you when they're ready. Watch for these:

Fill vs. New Set — How to Know the Difference

Most people can do 3 to 4 fills on the same set before needing a fresh start. After that, the acrylic builds up too thick and your natural nails need a chance to breathe. A new set makes sense when any of these apply:

More than one nail has broken or lifted significantly
You've had the same set for more than 8 weeks
Visible discoloration or cloudiness under the product
The shape has been patched multiple times and doesn't look right

When it's time for a new set, we take everything off carefully, check your natural nail health, and start clean. Twee is our go-to for new sets — her shape work is consistently clean and she takes her time. Book with her online or walk in and ask for her.

What Makes Some Nails Wear Out Faster

Two people can get the same set on the same day and need their fill at completely different times. These are the things that speed up wear:

If any of these describe your day-to-day, plan on coming in every 2 weeks rather than stretching to 3. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends keeping nail extensions away from harsh chemicals for the same reason.

Questions We Hear Every Week

How many fills can you get before needing a new set? +
Most nail techs recommend 3 to 4 fills before removing the old acrylic and starting fresh. After that, the product builds up too thick and it's harder to maintain a clean, healthy nail. Your nail tech will usually let you know when it's time.
Can I go 4 weeks without a nail fill? +
You can, but we wouldn't recommend it. By 4 weeks the fill line is significant, lifting is more likely, and the nails are more prone to breaking. Two to three weeks is the sweet spot — everything looks and feels its best in that window.
Do gel nails need fills too? +
Gel-X extensions need maintenance, though it's a little different from traditional acrylic fills. We remove and replace the gel tips rather than filling over them. The same 2–3 week timing applies. Happy to walk you through the difference when you come in.
Does a nail fill hurt? +
No — a proper fill should not hurt. If you feel pain or pressure at the fill line, tell your nail tech right away. It's usually a sign of lifting underneath that needs to be handled before it gets worse.
