Most clients ask us this on the way out the door — "When should I come back?" The honest answer is every 2 to 3 weeks for most people. But knowing why that timing matters — and what to watch for between visits — means you'll never walk around with nails that are overdue or damaged without realizing it.
We've been doing nails in Stanton for over five years. Here's what we tell every client about how often to get a nail fill.
Why Every 2 to 3 Weeks
Your natural nails keep growing underneath the acrylic. After about two weeks, a gap forms between the product and your cuticle — that's the fill line. It's not just a cosmetic issue. That gap collects moisture, and moisture trapped under lifting acrylic creates the conditions for bacteria or, in worse cases, a fungal infection.
Coming in for your acrylic nail fill every 2 to 3 weeks keeps the product bonded, the shape maintained, and your natural nails healthy underneath. Most of our regulars come every two weeks. Some stretch to three — it depends on how fast your nails grow and how you use your hands.
"Two weeks is safe. Three weeks is fine. Four weeks is when we start seeing problems."
Signs It's Time — Even If It Hasn't Been 2 Weeks
The calendar is a guide, not a rule. Your nails will tell you when they're ready. Watch for these:
- The fill line is visible — more than 3mm of natural nail showing near the cuticle
- Any edge is lifting, even slightly — product separating from the natural nail
- A nail broke or cracked at the tip or side wall
- The nails look thick and uneven from layers building up
- You're hiding your hands — that's usually the most honest sign
Fill vs. New Set — How to Know the Difference
Most people can do 3 to 4 fills on the same set before needing a fresh start. After that, the acrylic builds up too thick and your natural nails need a chance to breathe. A new set makes sense when any of these apply:
When it's time for a new set, we take everything off carefully, check your natural nail health, and start clean. Twee is our go-to for new sets — her shape work is consistently clean and she takes her time. Book with her online or walk in and ask for her.
What Makes Some Nails Wear Out Faster
Two people can get the same set on the same day and need their fill at completely different times. These are the things that speed up wear:
- Fast wear Hands-on work — cleaning, cooking, landscaping, construction
- Fast wear Frequent water exposure — dishes, swimming, long baths
- Fast wear Strong cleaning products — bleach and detergents break down the bond
- Fast wear Fast natural nail growth — you'll see the fill line in under 2 weeks
- Fast wear Using your nails as tools — we've all done it, but it does damage
If any of these describe your day-to-day, plan on coming in every 2 weeks rather than stretching to 3. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends keeping nail extensions away from harsh chemicals for the same reason.
